Play Readers will meet January 3, 2012

Play Readers won't meet while the Campus Theatre is closed for the holidays Dec. 19-Jan. 2, so our next meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre. For our combined Play Readers and Writers celebration this past Tuesday night, we had a fabulous feast and read The Lion in Winter.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be January 17, 2012. The deadline for the Method and Madness Playwriting Competition is January 14, so get those scripts in! The first prize is $2000--more info at http://www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com/PlaywritingCompetitionMainPage.htm.

If you're more interested in adjudicating scripts for the competition than in submitting one, the Second Saturdays Seminar on January 14 (1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre) will be a workshop on reading and evaluating scripts. Call 940 382-7014 x3 or email thedctteam@campustheatre.com for more info or to reserve a space.

Congratulations to Play Readers Dennis Welch, Damon Wadyko, Johnny Bryant, Brian Patrick, and Pat Watson, who have all been cast in DCT's Mainstage production of Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor! The show runs Jan. 27-Feb. 5.

Christmas Belles continues this weekend, with Play Readers Jo Cassell, Susanne Coffey, and Amber Bryant--it's a great way to get in a festive spirit, if you aren't there already.

Hope to see you in the New Year--Merry Everything to everybody!

Bring something edible or potable to share, and please help us celebrate the end of our 6th year of sharing plays together!

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be January 17, 2012, since the December meeting date falls when the Campus is closed for the holidays.

Kyla Welch will be leading the next Second Saturdays Seminar on Dec. 10; the topic will be Beginning Improv. The workshop is free and runs from 1-3 pm. Call 940 382-7014 x3 for more information or to reserve a place.

Play Readers will meet November 29, NOT Nov. 22!

With Thanksgiving coming up, and so many Play Readers going off to see friends and family (or welcoming friends and family here), we won't try to meet Tuesday, Nov. 22. Instead, we'll meet Tuesday, Nov. 29, even though it's technically the fifth Tuesday of the month. We're planning to read Dan Creson's new cycle of one-act plays, and we need a bunch of readers--please try to come if you can!

Last week, Playwrights of Denton met, but we didn't have enough readers to cover the roles in Dan's plays. The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be January 17, 2012, because the Campus will be closed for the holidays when we would usually meet in December.

Remember that the submission deadline for DCT's Method and Madness One-Act Play Competition is January 14, 2012. Prizes range from $2000 to $200. More info at http://www.dentoncommunitytheatre/PlaywritingCompetitionMainPage.htm.

Mark your calendars now for the Second Saturdays Seminar on December 10, 2011. Kyla Welch will be leading a workshop on Improv for Beginners, and it's going to be a really fun time. The workshop is free and runs from 1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre.

Friday, November 11, 2011

Playwrights will meet Nov. 15

Playwrights of Denton will meet at the Campus Theatre on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 7 pm. We have a cycle of three one-acts to read, so Play Readers are welcome (and needed).

Because so many of us are going out of town for Thanksgiving (or welcoming far-flung family and friends), there won't be a Play Readers meeting on Nov. 22--but we WILL meet on Nov. 29, even though it will be the fifth Tuesday of the month.

Last week, Play Readers had fun reading Noel Coward's Private Lives.

Two important fundraisers are coming up for DCT and the Campus Theatre: The Arts Guild Auction for the Arts is Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Center for the Visual Arts; and Beaujolais and More is Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Civic Center. They're both great events, and help us underwrite the Play Readers and Playwrights of Denton programs.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Hickory, Oct. 28, 29, Nov. 4, and 5 at 7:30 and Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 at 2 pm! More info at http://www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com/Macbethinfoandcast.htm. Or you can call 940 382-1915, M-F 1-5.

Play Readers and Writers on HIATUS until November!

Play Readers and Writers of Denton will be on hiatus for the months of September and October. So many of our members are in DCT's upcoming production of Macbeth that it doesn't make sense to meet until the show goes up. So our next meeting of Play Readers will be Nov. 1 at 7 pm, and our next meeting of Playwrights will be Nov. 15 at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

In the meantime, Kyla Welch will be leading the Second Saturdays Seminar on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre. She'll be presenting an overview of DCT's 42nd season--and she'll be bringing door prizes! This adult education outreach program is free; reservations are not necessary, but we appreciate knowing that you're planning to attend, so we can make enough handouts for everyone.

The first production of DCT's new season opens Sept. 9. It's The 39 Steps, a hilarious re-telling of Hitchcock's classic film--performed by 4 actors at a breakneck pace. Call the box office at 940 382-1915 (M-F 1-5) or stop on by the Campus to get your tickets!

Friday, August 26, 2011

Play Readers will NOT meet Aug. 30!

Play Readers will NOT meet on Aug. 30, since it's the fifth Tuesday in the month. We'll next meet at the Campus Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 6, starting at 7 pm to read a play out loud.

Last week, everyone who showed up for Play Readers also wanted to audition for Macbeth, so we didn't actually read a play in our usual way.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Sept. 20.

Congratulations to Play Readers Aileene Stark, Brad Speck, Bryan Patrick, Mark Jadrych, Wes Porter, Jessica Phillips, Dennis Welch, Rachel Tillman, Johnny Williams, and Fred and Jo Cassell, who are all cast in Macbeth. See, all that practice in cold readings really paid off!

No Play Readers on May 31

Because May 31 will be the 5th Tuesday of the month, Play Readers will be taking a break that night. We will next meet to read a play on Tuesday, June 7, starting at 7 pm, at the Campus Theatre. Last night, we read John Lee's The Last Resort, which was exciting in and of itself--but the evening will be unforgettable for those of us who were here for two other reasons: the surprise visit by former Play Reader Helen Exel, visiting from New Jersey; and the tornado sirens that precipitated a move into the ladies' rest room downstairs, where we felt safe and cozy (and acoustically enhanced) for the rest of the reading.

Play Readers/Writers automatically cancels when Denton is included in a tornado or flash flood (when downtown floods, the Campus can be impossible to reach or leave) warnings, but in cases of weather watches, we press on, just as we did last night.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be June 21.

Congratulations to Play Readers Rachel Tillman and Wes Porter, who have been cast in DCT's August production of Bye Bye Birdie. Break a leg!

Tickets are on sale for DCT's upcoming productions of Daughters of the Lone Star State (June 10-19) and Red White and Tuna (June 24-July 3). More info at http://www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com/events_shows.php

Play Readers of Denton will meet May 24

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, May 24, at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud. The Play Selection Committee has asked us to read a new play and let them know what we think of it, so if we haven enough readers, we'll tackle that one.

Last week, Playwrights of Denton met to read the first act of Claud Singer's new play, Kamikaze Cadillac, and then had a lively discussion about our impressions of it. The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be June 21.

Tickets are on sale now for DCT's production of Daughters of the Lone Star State, which runs June 10-19. Go online for tickets (www.campustheatre.com) or call the box office (M-F 1-5) at 940 382-1915.
