No Play Readers on May 31

Because May 31 will be the 5th Tuesday of the month, Play Readers will be taking a break that night. We will next meet to read a play on Tuesday, June 7, starting at 7 pm, at the Campus Theatre. Last night, we read John Lee's The Last Resort, which was exciting in and of itself--but the evening will be unforgettable for those of us who were here for two other reasons: the surprise visit by former Play Reader Helen Exel, visiting from New Jersey; and the tornado sirens that precipitated a move into the ladies' rest room downstairs, where we felt safe and cozy (and acoustically enhanced) for the rest of the reading.

Play Readers/Writers automatically cancels when Denton is included in a tornado or flash flood (when downtown floods, the Campus can be impossible to reach or leave) warnings, but in cases of weather watches, we press on, just as we did last night.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be June 21.

Congratulations to Play Readers Rachel Tillman and Wes Porter, who have been cast in DCT's August production of Bye Bye Birdie. Break a leg!

Tickets are on sale for DCT's upcoming productions of Daughters of the Lone Star State (June 10-19) and Red White and Tuna (June 24-July 3). More info at http://www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com/events_shows.php

The Campus Theatre will be closed Monday, May 30, in observance of Memorial Day.

Hope to see you at the Campus soon!

Play Readers of Denton will meet May 24

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, May 24, at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud. The Play Selection Committee has asked us to read a new play and let them know what we think of it, so if we haven enough readers, we'll tackle that one.

Please note that Tuesday, May 31, will be the fifth Tuesday in a month, and Play Readers (which meets the first, second, and fourth Tuesdays) will take a break that night.

Last week, Playwrights of Denton met to read the first act of Claud Singer's new play, Kamikaze Cadillac, and then had a lively discussion about our impressions of it. The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be June 21.

Play Readers Wes Porter and Rachel Tillman continue this weekend in Butterfield Stage's production of The Odd Couple up in Gainesville. Break a leg to both of them!

Tickets are on sale now for DCT's production of Daughters of the Lone Star State, which runs June 10-19. This satiric comedy skewers life in Lowake, Texas--which must be just down the road from Tuna, home to DCT's fundraiser production of Red, White, and Tuna June 24-July 3. Go online for tickets (www.campustheatre.com) or call the box office (M-F 1-5) at 940 382-1915.

Please come visit us at the Campus!

Playwrights of Denton meets May 17

Playwrights of Denton will meet Tuesday, May 17, starting at 7 pm upstairs at the Campus Theatre to help and support each other. Playwright Claud Singer has the first act of a new play, Kamikaze Cadillac, to read, so readers are especially welcome. There are 7 roles, and it's always really helpful for a playwright to hear a different voice for each character as opposed to doubling or tripling up.

The June meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be on the 21st.

Play Readers of Denton will meet May 24. Remember that May 31st is the fifth Tuesday in the month, so Play Readers will take the night off.

Play Readers Wes Porter and Rachel Tillman open tonight in Gainesville in Butterfield Stage's production of The Odd Couple. Ticket info at http://www.butterfieldstage.org/. Break a leg, Wes and Rachel!

The Second Saturdays Seminar tomorrow, May 14, will be at the Black Box (318 E. Hickory in the Denton Record-Chronicle building) starting at 1 pm. The topic will be "The Anatomy of a Production" and will feature a performance of the short one-act play Stone Parchment Saber by Jason Aaron Goldberg, followed by a talkback with the cast and production crew.

Music Theatre of Denton's current production of The Drowsy Chaperone continues this weekend at the Campus Theatre and features Play Reader Mike Strecher. More info at http://www.musictheatreofdenton.com/. The box office is open M-F 1-5 and one hour prior to performance for walk-up sales. Break a leg, Mike!

Hope to see YOU at the Campus or Black Box--soon!

Play Readers will meet May 10

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, May 10, upstairs at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud. Last week, we finished Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, and we all feel much smarter now.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Tuesday, May 17, upstairs at the Campus Theatre starting at 7 pm.

Music Theatre of Denton's production of The Drowsy Chaperone opens tonight and runs through May 15. More info at http://www.musictheatreofdenton.com/. Play Reader Mike Strecher is featured--break a leg, Mike!

Auditions for Denton Community Theatre's production of Bye Bye Birdie are May 8, 9, and 10. More info at http://www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com/ByeByeBirdie.htm. Break a leg, everyone!

The Second Saturdays Seminar this month will be "The Anatomy of a Production" with a special performance of Stone Parchment Saber, a one-act play by Jason Aaron Goldberg, and a talkback afterwards of the production process. The seminar will be Saturday, May 14, from 1-3 at DCT's Black Box--note the change from our usual Campus location! The Black Box is located just down the street from the Campus at 318 E. Hickory in the Denton Record-Chronicle building.

Hope to see you soon at the Campus or the Black Box!
