Play Readers will meet Feb. 14

Play Readers will meet Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre to read and evaluate two more one-act plays that are entered into the Method and Madness Playwriting competition. I can't promise that they'll be Valentine's Day appropriate, but I'll try! The Thin Line Film Festival will be using the Campus Theatre downstairs, but just check in at the box office and then we'll move upstairs to the Board Room as usual.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 pm.

The Second Saturdays Seminar from 1-3 pm on Saturday, Feb. 11, will continue our mission to read and evaluate two more one-act plays for the competition. Training is fast and easy, for anyone who hasn't done it yet!

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre (214 W. Hickory St.) to read a couple of one-acts out loud. Last week, we read (and then individually evaluated) 2 scripts, and we hope to do two more this week. We are making progress with the Method and Madness entries!

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre. We're ready for some new stuff!

Play Readers of Denton normally meets the first, second, and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and takes the odd fifth Tuesday off, but not this time! We WILL meet Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre (214 W. Hickory) to read a couple of one-acts out loud (and then individually evaluate them). Play Readers is currently charged with helping to read and evaluate entries for DCT's Method and Madness playwriting competition, and we need to meet as often as we can. Plus, it's so much more fun to read them out loud together!

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre (214 W. Hickory, Denton) to read a play or two out loud. For the next few weeks, Play Readers will be reading entries in the DCT Method and Madness Playwriting competition, so readers (and adjudicators) are in great demand!

Playwrights of Denton met last Tuesday, but since so many of our playwrights had just submitted for the competition, turnout was sparse. Playwrights of Denton will next meet Feb. 21 at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

The Second Saturdays Seminars on Feb. 11 and Mar. 10 (from 1-3 at the Campus Theatre) will be devoted to reading and adjudicating plays for the Method and Madness competition. At the Second Saturdays Seminar this past week, we had so much fun reading two plays out loud and then individually filling out evaluation forms that we decided to try it again (note: we don't and won't read plays by local playwrights at these public events).

Playwrights of Denton will meet Tuesday, January 17, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre. The deadline for submissions for the inaugural Method and Madness Playwriting Competition and Festival is Saturday, January 14th, so it's time to start working on the next round(s)!

The February meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

At the Play Readers of Denton meeting this past Tuesday, we read Beth Henley's Miss Firecracker Contest. The next meeting of Play Readers of Denton will be January 24; please note that Play Readers will NOT meet January 31st, as it will be the fifth Tuesday of the month.

The Second Saturdays Seminar on Saturday, January 14th, will be a workshop on reading and evaluating new plays. Participants will be able to go on to adjudicate one-act plays entered in the Method and Madness Playwriting Festival, if they wish. The seminar will be from 1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre and is free. Play Readers will meet January 10

Play Readers is 6 years old! We started on a very cold night in January, 2006, at the Emily Fowler Library, and the very first play we read was David Auburn's Proof. By the following week, we had moved to the North Branch Library, and within a few months we were the first program incorporated into Denton Community Theatre's then-new Outreach program.

Last week, Play Readers started the new year with an oldie-but-goodie, Jack Heifner's Vanities. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 10, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

The next meeting for Playwrights of Denton will be Tuesday, January 17, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre. But before then, the postmark date for the new Method and Madness Playwriting Competition is Saturday, January 14th, so get those one-acts in! First prize is $2000, and the top five winners will receive a staged reading at the Method and Madness Playwriting Festival, May 31-June 3, in addition to cash prizes. If playwriting isn't your thing (or you don't have time to get something entered), you can still be an important part of the competition and festival by volunteering to adjudicate. Adjudicators will be asked to read and evaluate a minimum of five one-act scripts. Feel unsure about evaluating? There's a form to guide you, with spaces for brief comments to help the playwrights. And if you want even more guidance the Second Saturdays Seminar on Saturday, January 14th, will be on--wait for it--"Reading and Evaluating New Plays," including use of the adjudication form. (You don't have to volunteer to adjudicate to attend the workshop, and you don't have to attend the workshop if you volunteer to adjudicate.) With Thanksgiving coming up, and so many Play Readers going off to see friends and family (or welcoming friends and family here), we won't try to meet Tuesday, Nov. 22. Instead, we'll meet Tuesday, Nov. 29, even though it's technically the fifth Tuesday of the month. We're planning to read Dan Creson's new cycle of one-act plays, and we need a bunch of readers--please try to come if you can!

Because so many of us are going out of town for Thanksgiving (or welcoming far-flung family and friends), there won't be a Play Readers meeting on Nov. 22--but we WILL meet on Nov. 29, even though it will be the fifth Tuesday of the month.

Last week, Play Readers had fun reading Noel Coward's Private Lives.

Two important fundraisers are coming up for DCT and the Campus Theatre: The Arts Guild Auction for the Arts is Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Center for the Visual Arts; and Beaujolais and More is Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Civic Center. They're both great events, and help us underwrite the Play Readers and Playwrights of Denton programs.

Play Readers and Writers of Denton will be on hiatus for the months of September and October. So many of our members are in DCT's upcoming production of Macbeth that it doesn't make sense to meet until the show goes up. So our next meeting of Play Readers will be Nov. 1 at 7 pm, and our next meeting of Playwrights will be Nov. 15 at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

In the meantime, Kyla Welch will be leading the Second Saturdays Seminar on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre. She'll be presenting an overview of DCT's 42nd season--and she'll be bringing door prizes! This adult education outreach program is free; reservations are not necessary, but we appreciate knowing that you're planning to attend, so we can make enough handouts for everyone.

Last week, Play Readers read The Complete Works of Wm. Shakespeare (Abridged) and a good time was had by all.

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, June 28, at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud.

Last week, Playwrights of Denton met to support the work of local playwrights. We read scenes from Elsie Barrow and Claud Singer, and the start of a children's book by Rachel Tillman, which will make a fine family-audiences script in the future.

No Play Readers on May 31

Because May 31 will be the 5th Tuesday of the month, Play Readers will be taking a break that night. We will next meet to read a play on Tuesday, June 7, starting at 7 pm, at the Campus Theatre. Last night, we read John Lee's The Last Resort, which was exciting in and of itself--but the evening will be unforgettable for those of us who were here for two other reasons: the surprise visit by former Play Reader Helen Exel, visiting from New Jersey; and the tornado sirens that precipitated a move into the ladies' rest room downstairs, where we felt safe and cozy (and acoustically enhanced) for the rest of the reading.

Play Readers/Writers automatically cancels when Denton is included in a tornado or flash flood (when downtown floods, the Campus can be impossible to reach or leave) warnings, but in cases of weather watches, we press on, just as we did last night.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be June 21.

Congratulations to Play Readers Rachel Tillman and Wes Porter, who have been cast in DCT's August production of Bye Bye Birdie. Break a leg!

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, May 24, at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud. The Play Selection Committee has asked us to read a new play and let them know what we think of it, so if we haven enough readers, we'll tackle that one.

Last week, Playwrights of Denton met to read the first act of Claud Singer's new play, Kamikaze Cadillac, and then had a lively discussion about our impressions of it. The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be June 21.

We canceled last week, hoping that the storm would then swing north and miss us (fat lot of good that did!) but are keeping our fingers crossed that we'll be able to meet this Thursday. Playwrights of Denton will meet Jan. 18

Playwrights of Denton will meet upstairs at the Campus Theatre starting at 7 pm to support each others' writing processes. Bring your ideas, your monologues, your scenes, acts, and entire plays--everything is welcome! The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Feb. 15.

Play Readers of Denton met Jan. 11 and read Del Shores' Daughters of the Lone Star State. Play Readers will next meet Jan. 25.

Denton Community Theatre's contest production of Proof opens Fri., Jan. 14 and runs until the 23rd. The show will be performed exactly as it will be for the American Association of Community Theatre's competition, which begins in Lewisville the last weekend in January, and may take the cast and crew to state (which DCT won in 2009 with Doubt), national (which DCT won in 2007 with Crowns), and even international (Crowns was invited to perform in Germany for an international theatre festival) levels.

Play Readers of Denton will meet upstairs at the Campus Theatre at 7 pm on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, to read a play out loud. Last week, our group celebrated the new year by reading Noel Coward's Private Lives.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be January 18.

DCT Outreach Director Julie Brinker will be leading the Second Saturdays Seminar from 1-3 pm on January 8 at the Campus Theatre. The topic will be "Best Foot Forward: the Basics of Blocking and Stage Notation" and will cover what directors hope their actors already know (but so many don't!), including cheating out, easy rules for stage compositions and stances, and quick abbreviations for writing for noting stage blocking in scripts. The program is free, but we appreciation knowing that you're planning to attend, so that we can make enough handouts to go around. DCT's competition production of Proof opens Friday, Jan. 14, at the Campus Theatre. Play Readers and Writers will have a combined meeting starting at 7 pm Tuesday, Dec. 14, at the Campus Theatre. We will read a new play by one of our playwrights and have a holiday celebration. Plan to bring something festive to share.

Last week, Play Readers got the holiday season started by reading the Jones/Hope/Wooten Texas comedy, Christmas Belles. (Play Reader Kim Campbell is currently performing the role of Frankie in Greater Lewisville Community Theatre's production--break a leg, Kim!)

The Campus Theatre is closed for the holidays Dec. 20-31, so the next meeting of Play Readers will be Jan. 4; the next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be Jan. 18.

Kyla Welch is leading the Second Saturdays Seminar on Dec. 11 from 1-3; the workshop's topic will be Props--how to make, find, borrow, and/or buy them for a production. The seminar is specifically geared toward the novice who would like to help with props under the guidance of a more experienced Propsmaster. All Second Saturdays Seminars are free and reservations are not required. Because the Campus Theatre will be closed Dec. 18-Jan. 2, which will include the usual meeting times for Playwrights and Play Readers on Dec. 21 and 28, we need to consolidate meetings for this very busy month. After Play Readers meets as usual on Dec. 7, let's have a joint meeting of Play Readers and Playwrights on Dec. 14 to read Dan Creson's latest draft and have a holiday celebration. Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, Nov. 23, upstairs at the Campus Theatre, 214 W. Hickory St., to read a play out loud. Tuesday, Nov. 30, will be the fifth Tuesday in the month, so there will be no meeting that night.

Playwrights of Denton met Nov. 16. A local children's author spoke to us about having someone adapt her picture book into a play for young audiences. We brainstormed some potential staging ideas with her and she left several copies of her book for members to borrow and think about.

This just in! Local theatre legend Bill Kirkley will be leading a workshop on Improvisation for the Second Saturdays Seminar on Oct. 9 from 1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre. Reservations are required for this free workshop. Mr. Kirkley most recently directed The Producers and Don't Dress for Dinner for Denton Community Theatre, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Company, and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, for Music Theatre of Denton. He last performed in DCT's The Complete Works of Wm. Shakespeare, Abridged, and is also a published playwright.

Improvisation, or performing spontaneously, is considered to be a crucial aspect of performer training today, working on basic skills like listening, concentration, confidence, and performing instinctively and spontaneously. Through exercises and games, performers learn to act and react in the moment, deepening their ability to behave believably in imaginary circumstances on stage or screen.

Play Readers will meet Tuesday, Sept. 7, upstairs at the Campus Theatre starting at 7 pm. Last week Play Readers fell on the fifth Tuesday of a month, so we had a night off.

Play Readers will meet August 24 at 7 pm upstairs at the Campus Theatre to read Drood, based on Dickens' unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood, out loud. This will be our first attempt at reading a musical, so if anyone has suggestions on how to go about it, please let us know. Auditions for Drood are August 29 and 30 at 7 pm at the Campus Theatre.

Back on August 10, Play Readers met to read Donald Margulies' Dinner with Friends. Playwrights of Denton met August 17, and Dan Creson presented the most recent draft of his latest script. Playwrights of Denton will next meet September 21.

This is the last weekend of DCT's smash hit The Producers, if you haven't seen it yet (or want to see it again). Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, July 27, at 7 pm upstairs at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud. Last week a group of us read most of Claud Singer's new play, Merisi, and then discussed it.

Belated congratulations to Mark Jadrych, who will be playing Dr. Chasuble in The Importance of Being Earnest for DCT in September--he was inadvertantly left off the list of Play Readers cast in the show last week. Playwrights of Denton will meet upstairs at the Campus Theatre on July 20 starting at 7 pm to talk about playwrighting and/or read a draft of a members' work out loud. Extra readers are always welcome!

Last week, Play Readers of Denton met to read two short one-act plays: J.M. Barrie's The Twelve-Pound Look and Susan Glaspell's Suppressed Desires.

The Second Saturdays Seminar on August 14 will be an overview of DCT's 2010-11 season with Outreach Director Julie Brinker. The seminar is free and runs 1-3 pm at the Campus Theatre.

The final show of DCT's current season, Mel Brooks' The Producers, opens August 6 and plays weekends through August 22.

Last week, Playwrights of Denton met, but no new scripts were read. We all have great plans for a creative July! The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be July 20.

This is the last weekend for DCT's Night of the Iguana, featuring Play Readers Rachel Tillman and Mark Jadrych. And this is the first weekend for Butterfield Stage's production of Footloose in Gainesville, featuring Play Readers Wes Porter and Helen Exel. Break a leg, everyone!

DCT's summer fundraiser, Encore 3: The Divas! will be performed June 25 and 26 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15; tickets to the June 25 Gala Reception and Performance are $50, and include a pre-show reception across the street in the DATCU building with delicious hors d'oeuvres and wine/beer.

The Second Saturdays Seminar this month is an in-house training day for staff, but public Second Saturdays will resume with the re-scheduled "Opening the Black Box" on April 10 from 1-3 pm.

Play Readers will meet Jan. 12

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, January 12, from 7-9(ish) to read another play out loud. Last week, we read John Patrick Shanley's Doubt, and then had a really good discussion about playwriting structure and other questions.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be January 19.

Don't forget that Christopher Redden will be leading the Second Saturdays Seminar on January 9 from 1-3 pm. The topic is "Can You Hear Me Now? The Basics of Running the Sound Board." This is a great seminar for anyone interested in sound and/or a crew position that allows you to watch every performance and sit down while you're doing your job. And best of all, it's FREE--just let DCT know you're planning to attend, so we can make sure there are enough handouts. Email thedctteam@campustheatre.com or call 940 382-7014 x3 to reserve a spot.

Congratulations to all the Play Readers and Writers who have been cast in Brad Speck's Cyrano! As of the cast listing today, we'll be seeing Mark Jadrych, Jo Cassell, Fred Cassell, Helen Exel, Dan Creson, Wes Porter, Rachel Tillman, and Damon Wadyko. Apologies to anyone we've missed. Play Readers will meet Jan. 4, 2010!

Play Readers will not meet until the new year--Jan. 4, 2010, to be exact, from 7-9(ish) pm upstairs at the Campus Theatre. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Playwrights of Denton met last Tuesday, with the starts of new plays by Dan and Claud to read. The next playwrights' meeting will be Jan. 19.

Cyrano auditions are this Sunday and Monday, Dec. 20 & 21, at 7 pm. Break a leg, everyone!

Play WRITERS of Denton will meet Dec. 15

Playwrights of Denton will meet Tuesday, Dec. 15, from 7-9(ish) pm upstairs at the Campus Theatre to talk about our latest efforts. Anyone have any holiday scenes/monologues to share? This will be the LAST meeting of Play Readers or Writers until the new year. The Campus Theatre will be closed Dec. 21-Jan.3, so we will pick up with Play Readers on Jan.5, 2010.

Last Tuesday, Play Readers met on a very cold night to read Ken Ludwig's hilarious Moon Over Buffalo.

Don't forget that Lucinda Breeding will be leading the Second Saturdays Seminar from 1-3 pm here at the Campus Theatre on December 12. Her topic is "Media Whack-a-Mole" and she'll be covering all the hows and whys of putting together an electronic press kit to publicize local arts events. The event is free but we'd appreciate knowing that you're planning to attend; please shoot an email to thedctteam@campustheatre.com or call 940 382-7014 x3 to add your name to the list.

Last but not least, A Tuna Christmas opens tonight, and there are still some tickets left for all performances. Please don't miss this timely "Tuna" take on the holidays!

Play Readers will meet Dec. 8

Play Readers of Denton will meet Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 7-9(ish) pm upstairs at the Campus Theatre to read a play out loud. Last week, David, Claud, and a very froggy Julie (which worked out okay since her role was male) read Yasmina Reza's award-winning Art.

The next meeting of Play Writers of Denton will be December 15--and that will be the last meeting of either group until the Campus reopens in the New Year. To be specific, we won't meet Dec. 22 or 29, but will meet again Jan. 5, 2010.

The Theatre School is performing The Homecoming this weekend--all tickets are $8, general admission. And then A Tuna Christmas opens on Dec. 11, running through the 20th. All tickets are $15, reserved seating. See the website, www.dentoncommunitytheatre.com, for more info.

Break a leg to Play Readers Wes and Helen, performing this weekend and next in Mr. Scrooge the Musical up in Gainesville. It sounds like they're having a great time! Info at www.butterfieldstage.org if you'd like to go up and give them a standing ovation.

The Second Saturdays Seminar on Dec. 12 from 1-3 pm will feature Lucinda Breeding, Denton Record-Chronicle Features Editor, on Media Whack-a-Mole. She'll be explaining all the tricks to getting your non-profit event publicized, including submission of digital photos and electronic press kits. And, last but not least, auditions for Cyrano deBergerac will be Dec. 20 and 21 at 7 pm here at the Campus Theatre. Break a leg, buckle a swash, and tear a passion into tatters, everyone!

Play Readers will meet Tuesday, December 1, upstairs from 7-9(ish) upstairs at the Campus Theatre. Last week, a small group read Sam Shepard's God of Hell.

The next meeting of Playwrights of Denton will be December 15.

Please note that Play Readers will NOT meet while the Campus Theatre is closed for the holidays on December 22 and 29.

Everyone interested in how to get effective publicity for your event should try to get to the Second Saturdays Seminar on Dec. 12 here at the Campus Theatre! Play Readers will meet upstairs at the Campus Theatre on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 7-9(ish) pm to read a play out loud. Last week Play Writers met to read Dan Cresom's new play, Criminal Behavior, before he sends it off to competition. Break a pen, Dan!

This is the last weekend for Forever Plaid, and if you haven't seen it yet, you're in for a real treat. Congratulations, Jocelyn, on your part in a great show!

Play WRITERS will meet Nov. 17

Welcome to the Play Readers/Writers of Denton blog!

We need READERS for the Playwrights of Denton meeting on Nov. 17.

Playwrights of Denton will meet upstairs at the Campus Theatre from 7-9(ish) pm to support local playwrights and their efforts. And this week, we have a full script by member Dan Creson. He would like to hear it read out loud before he sends it off to a competition. We need 3 women and 5 men, if possible, so that Dan can really hear it with enough different voices.

Last week, we had a small but highly philosophical group at Play Readers, and got started on the topic of the influence of the subconscious/unconscious on creativity. We ended up with an evening that was completely different for us, in which we watched the DVD of Allegro Non Troppo (an Italian spoof on Fantasia) instead of actually reading a play! We'll get back to our regular agenda on Nov. 24.
